Good morning everyone. This morning I am going to tell you a little bit about my hometown. St Albans, Hertfordshire is located 30 miles north of London. It was originally established as Verulanium by the Romans and Verulanium Park is a major feature of the city. St Albans is named after Alban, a former pagan who converted to Christianity. He was beheaded on the site of what is now St Albans Cathedral when he wouldn't renounce his new found faith. The oldest licensed pub in England is located in my hometown. It dates back to the 1100's and is called Ye Olde Fighting Cocks. It was originally located near the St Albans Cathedral but it was dismantled and relocated to its current location in 1547. It was named after the popular sport of cock-fighting which was banned in the mid-1800's.
The Medieval Clock Tower is one of the oldest working clock towers from its time period. The townspeople built the clock tower in rebellion to the sounding of the curfews from the St Albans Cathedral. The people said they could set their own curfews.
The St Albans Market is very popular. You can find all manner of fresh fruit and vegetables, local artisan cheeses, and baked goods.
The St Albans Rugby team won the National Conference in 2007!
The St Albans Coat of Arms of the City Council and District is very colorful.
